The 19th Macau Inter-tertiary English Debating Competition, organized by the Macau English Debating Association and co-organized by Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), concluded with great success on October 15, 2023. The prestigious event, held at the MUST campus, brought together over 150 students, teachers, and debate enthusiasts to witness intense and thought-provoking discussions.

Sixteen teams from four institutions—University of Macau (UM), Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) and Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT)—participated in this two-day event. These teams showcased their debating prowess across a series of rigorous rounds that tested their critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills.

The grand final featured the motion: “This House Would view the United Nations with Optimism instead of cynicism as it approaches its 80th anniversary in 2025.” After a highly competitive and insightful debate, University of Macau A emerged as the champion, with Macau University of Science and Technology A taking the runner-up title. The exceptional debating skills displayed by all participants reflected the high standards of intellectual discourse that this competition promotes annually.

The event was presided over by Mr. Loke Wing Fatt, who served as the Chief Adjudicator, along with a distinguished panel of invited adjudicators, including Mr. David Africa, Mr. Chansol Park, Mr. Luigi Alcaneses, Ms. Irene Dela Cruz, and Mr. Kithmina Hewage. The competition’s logistics were expertly managed by Tab Director Vu Anh Tuan.

The 19th Macau Inter-tertiary English Debating Competition continues to be a prominent platform for nurturing debate talent in Macau, and the success of this year’s event sets a strong foundation for future competitions.
